Rome’s Anathemas: Insights into the Papal Pantheon, by Selwyn Stevens, Ph.D.

There are many in the Protestant community who claim that the Roman Catholic Church is a cult, just like the Mormons and the Watchtower. On the other hand, the Church of Rome has defenders who have valid points to make, such as their consistent opposition to abortion, euthanasia and homosexual marriage. This vital book investigates Constantine’s divorce of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and it’s replacement with paganism.

Later the Council of Trent rejected the Biblical basis of Luther’s Reformation and pronounced curses on all who disagreed with them. Followers of Jesus are called to help break all curses. It raises the question, “Are Roman Catholics cursed by God for anti-Biblical beliefs and practices?”

What should Christians do with Pope Francis saying that having a personal relationship with Jesus is dangerous and harmful? When Pope John Paul 2nd stated in 1999 that there is no real place called “hell,” he effectively called Jesus a liar. Jesus tells us about hell in 238 verses in the Bible. Who are we to believe? “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” according to 2 Timothy 3:16. (See also Colossians 2:8-10 & Proverbs 30:5-6) For Christians, Scripture is the Canon or standard for Christian life and belief.

In the Gospel of St John, we read of the marriage feast at Cana. Here Mary emphasises the importance of Jesus and the words that He says. Realising that the wine was gone and that she herself could not do anything, Mary tells Jesus because He is the only One who could do something. Mary then gives the stewards her last recorded words and only command - one that we must consider for us to be saved. Mary said, “Whatever He say to you, do it!”
